Immortelle (Italian strawflower, Curry plant) - Helichrysum italicum = Helichrysum angustifolium (Lam.) DC.
An evergreen subshrub from Southern Europe, 50-60 cm high. The leaves are small, linear, up to 3 cm long, bluish in color, pubescent. The flowers are light yellow, small, 2-4 mm in diameter, collected in corymbose inflorescences up to 8 cm in diameter.
A plant with soft pubescence will fit perfectly into the rock garden landscape, where it forms picturesque curtains in a silvery color scheme. Also decorative during the flowering period (from July to autumn) with the warm tones of the original baskets. Will decorate a flower wall, a herb garden, a garden bed, a flower bed, or a mixborder. It is also useful for use in winter compositions.
Italian immortelle is heat-loving: it can withstand temperatures as low as -10°C. Light-loving, drought-resistant, prefers sandy soils (but grows well in other types of soils).
It differs from Helichrysum arenarium in having taller stems, narrow leaves with downturned edges, lighter inflorescences and involucre leaves, as well as a stronger aroma.
Usage.
The aroma of curry plant goes well with stewed fish dishes. The spice is used to flavor meat stewed in sweet and sour sauce.
A plant with a delicately tart herbaceous aroma, reminiscent of “curry”, in which even the faint aroma of rose is additionally manifested.
In Mediterranean countries, confectionery, drinks, and liqueurs are flavored with immortelle.
Water infusions and decoctions of Italian immortelle are used for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver, cholecystitis, hepatitis, bronchial asthma, rheumatism, hay fever, conjunctivitis. The herb is used in the formulation of preventive antidiabetic tea.
A decoction of flower baskets is taken for acute cholecystitis and cholangitis, which complicate pregnancy. The decoction is useful for urolithiasis and uterine fibroids.
In dermatology, immortelle preparations are used in the complex treatment of itchy dermatoses, urticaria and psoriasis.
Essential oil is used in perfumery and cosmetic products because it has a strong and persistent aroma and fixing properties. It contains nerol, geraniol, linalool, furfural, etc. (but it is not recommended for use in the first half of pregnancy and for children under 12 years of age).
